This Valentine’s Day date has enough clichéd romance; dinner-for-two, breath-taking views of a city and a sun set. Except, the dinner-for-two is on an Arabian-style dhow, the view is of Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal and you will be sailing into the sun set, quite literally. Leisure boating company West Coast Marine in Mumbai is offering couples the comforts and romance afforded by the Shazma, a 75-ft Arabian-style dhow. Made of Burma teak, the brass-work studded dhow comes with an open mid-deck, an air conditioned bedroom (and an adorable bathroom), an entertainment system and a galley along with a staff of three. The boat can hold up to 45 people, so there’s more than enough space for a moonlit dinner a deux.
Bharati Mongia, director of West Coast Marine, says her company can also help customise the experience for a customer. “We can arrange for a couples’ spa massage on-board the Shazma and can also help organise a romantic dinner from restaurants like Indigo or Joss,” says Mongia and adds that they’ve even arranged for a newly-wed couple to spend their first night on the boat.
Extras, like arranging to arrive for a Valentine cruise by vintage car; or zooming across the Arabian Sea on jet skies can also be arranged. If romantic day trip can also include a customised tour of forts close to Mumbai’s coast. West Coast Marine has been in the leisure boating business since 1994, and with their ability to cater to customers’ whim, have put together some exotic boating experiences. Mongia says a lot of Marwaris have chartered their boats for mehendi or intimate sangeets. “We even organised a tour of Mumbai for one foreign guest, where he was given a tour of Mumbai by a famous historian, in a vintage car. They ended the tour with lunch on a boat.”
The privacy (an in a courting couple’s case, intimacy) chartering a boat allows a great plus for those who can afford the price tag. “We even arranged for a client’s son’s very luxurious 16th birthday party, complete with caviar and jet skies,” says Mongia. Luxury comes at a price. Just hiring the dhow for four hours for your Valentine’s Day dinner for two will cost Rs. 1.2 lakh. Depending on what else you want, your bill can read anywhere from Rs. 5 to Rs. 78 lakhs!
